Dr Davies began the piracy session with Year 8 Scholars by asking them to draw their image of a pirate. The students then discussed where these images came from and talked about the power of the cinema, Pirates of the Caribbean and popular fiction, Treasure Island for example. The students were surprised to discover that most of these images derived from one or two key sources from the early 18th century. The group then looked at how trustworthy was that information?
Dr Davies concluded the session by talking about modern piracy and the group read some documentary evidence as they compared the late seventeenth century with the 21st looking for change and continuity. The session ended with the thought that a recent film about modern piracy “Captain Phillips” treats the topic of modern piracy in a rather different way than most rather glamourised cinema coverage of their earlier predecessors.
