From Harry Potter to the field of linguistics.

Today, Sixth Form linguists enjoyed a talk on Parseltonguegiven by Dr Francis Nolan, Emeritus Professor of Phonetics at the University of Cambridge.

Francis discussed how he had to consider phonology, syntax and lexical borrowing when inventing a constructed language spoken between snakes in the Harry Potter films.

It was a fascinating talk, with several students asking Francis some insightful questions about his work in the field of linguistics.
