Members of the Year 11 Colloquium enjoyed the first of a two part presentation by Head of Spanish Ms Ellie Paul on the history of cinema.

The students began by considering different genres of films and key directors as well as the perhaps surprisingly persistent appeal of going to the Cinema. This was a prelude to a fascinating study of the origins of the 20th Century’s only new art form and the students looked at examples of film from Soviet Russia and 1920s France in which directors were playing with the exciting new techniques and in the case of Russia using the art form as a vehicle for propagating a socialist vision. Both extracts very much captured the Modernist spirit of the early 1920s.

The students were left with the task of thinking about the opening sequences of their favourite films, a theme to be developed in the next session.
