At Eltham College, we believe in nurturing holistic growth and development in our students. Drama education serves as a dynamic platform, fostering essential skills, values, and personal growth that extend far beyond the stage.

Drama offers a space for our pupils to explore, question, and express themselves in unique and impactful ways. It’s not just about performing: ; it’s an immersive experience, a journey through imagination and creativity. Through drama, students investigate real-world stories and themes, blending various subjects like History, Politics, and Psychology into a tangible, physical exploration.

Unlike traditional classroom settings, drama allows for hands-on learning, and it encourages students to form opinions and perspectives that challenge conventions. In drama classes, expression isn’t limited to words alone: it flourishes through movement, puppetry, projections, and the spoken word – nurturing confidence and presenting interests in a myriad of creative approaches.

Drama Director in Residence at Eltham College, Isabelle Tyner, says: “Engaging in drama isn’t just about learning lines or mastering stage directions. It’s about embracing vulnerability and taking risks. Students contribute ideas, make offers, and collectively create something special. This collaborative process nurtures resilience as ideas are shared, discussed, accepted, or set aside. Students become invested in crafting characters, honing their voices, gestures, and even costume choices. This personal investment not only sparks excitement but also cultivates confidence that transcends the stage, preparing students for interviews, presentations, and social interactions. Moreover, drama fosters empathy and compassion as students explore stories and characters, encouraging them to see the world from different perspectives.”

Here at Eltham College, we believe that a drama room is much more than just a space for creativity: it’s also a haven for teamwork and camaraderie. Devising a show requires everyone’s unique strengths – pushing boundaries, and embracing new experiences. Collaboration is at the heart of every production, from the cast to the crew. Every individual’s contribution is valued, emphasising the importance of collective effort. On stage, actors are intricately connected, relying on each other’s focus, movement, and interactions to create a seamless performance. This collaboration extends beyond the stage, fostering friendships and bonds that are forged through shared vulnerability and creativity.

In essence, drama isn’t just an art form: it’s a transformative tool that nurtures confidence, empathy, collaboration, and self-expression in our students. Valuable skills that extend far beyond the stage and that will propel them to success wherever they go.
