A busy week of fencing offered much promise for the future of fencing at Eltham College.
Both Lachlan Jarvie and Francesco Roccato competed at the British Youth Championship Qualifiers at Whitgift School last weekend. It was a challenging day given that both students are in Year 10 and were competing at U16 level for two of the five spaces to represent the South East region at the British Youth Championships in Sheffield. Both succeeded in qualifying, with Lachlan finishing runner-up in the competition.
This served as excellent preparation for the Public Schools’ Fencing Championship, which took place last week over three days at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre. Fielding a team of nine fencers in the Epée and Foil competitions, Sebastian Jarvis (top 32) and Ludovico Jones (top 16) performed well in the Foil competition whilst Lachlan Jarvie placed in the top 32 in Epée and top 16 in Foil. Returning from illness to join the team for the Sabre competition, Francesco Roccato joined Lachlan Jarvie by finishing in the top 32 for the Junior (U16) category.
For many of the fencers it was their first experience of competition fencing. This experience is sure to benefit them ahead of the British School Team Championships.
