Eltham College Scholarship Programme

Mr Skipworth spoke to Year 9 Athenaeum Scholars this week about the religious motif in films.  Students gave a number of film titles to which Mr Skipworth explained the motif and then delivered an enlightening presentation about what he saw as the main types of religious motif that lay behind the films.  Titles from Frozen to the Magnificent Seven and Spiderman to Chicken Run were discussed and students considered ideas of saviour figures, heroic journeys, redemptions, and the struggle between good and evil.

This links to work done by researchers at the University of Vermont who have claimed, following the analysis of thousands of novels that there are essentially six basic story types (Christopher Booker had Seven in his well-known book of 2004).

The lesson forms part of the Scholars Programme which includes workshops and lectures overseen by our Head of Academic Scholarship, Mr Cavendish.
