After the success at the ESSKIA Regional Qualifiers at Chatham in September, four of the Eltham College Ski teams headed to Norwich for the English Finals at the weekend. After leaving the College at lunchtime, the team arrived at the ski slope for a practice session to familiarise themselves with the slope in preparation for an exhilarating two days of racing.
Saturday 5 October began with an early start, but the U12 and U14 teams were raring to go for the morning’s competition. The U12 team (Aurelius W, Alex B, Kayden G-J and Sebastien A) faced some fierce competition with Aurelius (Year 4) racing against boys up to three years older. The U14 team (Boden K, Fred B, Adam C and Josh F) put in a strong performance, achieving bronze medals and ranking the team third place in England for their age group. An excellent achievement, with particularly impressive results from both Adam and Boden, who has slotted into the team excellently since joining Eltham College in September.
The afternoon saw the Eltham College U16 and U19 teams competing against much tougher competition than they had come across at Chatham. The U16 team were up first with Alex L, Johnny K, Harry J and Theo A all pushing themselves to their limits. The team achieved the top position and took home the Overall U16 Male trophy. Next up was the U19 team, consisting of Ben H, Matty M, Diaco A and Fergus B. All students set impressive times and came in second place overall.
After some ski prep and a team briefing, two of our teams headed back to the hotel to re-fuel and get a good night’s rest ahead of the Open Championships on Sunday morning, with the chance to qualify for the British Finals in November in Stoke. A much tougher course was set and, with all age groups competing against each other, we knew that the competition would be harder. All eight boys showed immense composure and laid down some excellent runs, with the U16 team coming in 6th place and U19 team in 2nd place, resulting in both teams earning a place at the British Finals. A mention must also go to Diaco, who achieved the best time of the day, winning the trophy for the Fastest Individual.
An incredible set of results for the Ski team, which is mainly down to the dedication, effort in training and team spirit showed by all the boys who took part. A big thank you to Emily Evans for coaching, Mr Hindocha and Miss Caudle for race support and to the parents for their continued support on race days.
