English Schools Ski Association Qualifier Race – Brentwood 17 September 2017

Sunday 17 September saw the Eltham College U12, 14A, U14B, U16 and U19 Ski teams compete in the English Schools Ski Association qualifiers competition at Brentwood Ski Slope. The pressure was on as there were places for the English finals, held in Norwich in October, to be won with a chance to go through to the British finals. Our younger members of the ski team (Frederick Bidwell, Adam Cornick, Thomas Harrison and Liam Foley) managed to combine two solid runs making them the fastest by a huge 15 seconds in the U12 competition with Adam achieving the quickest time in the U12 category with a combined time of 26.29 and securing them a place in the final.

The U14 A team consisting of Alex Lancaster, Luke McCool, Jonathan Kay and Theo Austin all skied with the precision and skill they’ve shown in training and all put in quick times ensuring a convincing second place by the slimmest of margins. They too did enough to make it through to Norwich with Theo coming fourth overall in his age category. The U14B team (Ketan McMillan, Harry Johnson, Will Robinson and Tom Kay, who stepped in at the last minute) also skied commendably with many of the boys competing above their regular age category finishing in fifth place.

The boys in the U16 team made up of Pietro Vascotto-Vidal, Kyle McMillan, Liam Donnelly and Fergus Bidwell were spurred on by the success of the younger boys and determined to match their achievement. They pushed themselves hard, but unfortunately were not able to record a team time on both runs and were therefore unable to proceed to the next stage.

The U19 team were again mainly skiing up on their usual age category, but they did not let this intimidate them and were able to show their prowess on a dry slope. All four skiers (Matthew McCool, Daragh McHale, Ben Hummel and Diaco Abrishami) put in an excellent performance placing them third in their category and will join the U12 and U14A in Norwich. Diaco also managing to get the quickest time of the day with a total time of 21.72 across both his runs.

Another great performance by the Eltham College Ski team who are going from strength to strength and are now training as intensely as ever for their upcoming races.
