Hockey Report – 18 March 2019

1ST

The 1st XI team made it two wins of four in a busy week. Firstly, on Monday the boys took the game to Caterham School in a superb display of attacking hockey. When the boys get it right, they are a joy to watch. Three goals from Toby and super strikes from Olly and Ashley saw the boys win 5-1 against a strong Caterham side.

The other side of the boys showed on Wednesday as they came unstuck against a good Dulwich College team, losing 2-0. We never really got out of second gear and struggled to find any rhythm.

Finally, a magnificent 4-2 win against a tenacious Cranbrook School side. Early goals from James and Max as well as a Toby drag flick gave the boys a 3-0 lead that was cut to 3-1 late in the first half. Cranbrook brought it back to 3-2 but Ashley would seal the game 4-2 with a magnificent solo effort late on.

2ND

The 2nd team played out and exciting draw. There were plenty of end to end exchanges, but the boys will know that they had the lions share of possession and opportunities. A neatly worked move down the right saw James tap in at the far post to give Eltham College the lead. Chances would come and go and somehow with ten minutes to go Eltham College found themselves 2-1 down. The boys never gave up and managed to score after a number of rebounds. 2-2 and a very good performance.

Under 15A

The Under 15A’s were keen to end a run of defeats and set about asserting themselves in the game by working hard on and off the ball right from the start. We started strongly with Tom carrying the ball and drawing fouls from the defenders. We won a short corner early on and James slotted home from close in the put Eltham College ahead after three minutes. Alex was running the game and found James unmarked who slotted it home for his second, 2-0. James then went on to complete his hat trick after some neat work from Ilia. Jack made an important save to preserve his clean sheet as we tore up the other end of the pitch. Jameison scored his first of the season to make it 4-0 and finally James netted his fourth goal of the day with the final score finishing 5-0 to Eltham College.

Under 15B

The Under 15B had a rather one-sided match on Saturday with the Eltham team dominating from start to finish. The only area they struggled in was scoring. Chance after chance was missed with Louis and Dominic firing the ball into the heart of the defence. Any counter attacks by Cranbrook School were broken up efficiently by Sam and Will who both had strong games. Eventually, Eltham College managed to score with Joe firing in a goal from close in with only five minutes remaining. Almost immediately from the restart Cranbrook got the ball into the Eltham D for the first time in the game and Ed Botes had to make a smart save to maintain that slender 1-0 lead. Eltham held on to record a well-deserved win.

Under 14A

The Under 14A boys bounced back with a very convincing 9-0 win. A new system meant the boys had to adapt quickly, which they did, and the plan was executed perfectly from the start. We went 1-0 up within a minute which was a sign of things to come as what followed was a great brand of attacking hockey with loads of passing moves and overlapping runs. A few players played out of position to gain some experience in other areas of the pitch. Jamie scored a hat trick even though he was playing in the year above his age group, with one of them coming from a great reverse stick strike which left the keeper no chance. A great performance in which everyone involved played well and impressed.

Under 14B

The Under 14B were involved in a tough affair and unfortunately didn’t want it as much as the opposition did on the day, we were second to most 50/50s and struggled to put the ball in the back of the net. Our defensive efforts were good, but the Cranbrook School attack was relentless and put their chances away when they did come, something we need to work on.
