The 1st XI came into Friday night’s game with Reigate Grammar School with a point to prove.
The first half was very even with neither keeper seriously tested but Eltham having more of the clearer chances, but they were not hitting the target.
The second half yielded an early breakthrough for EC as Reyhan tapped into an empty net as the Reigate defence tackled each other. The second came soon after as a quick break saw Ben locate James at the far post to make it 2-0 and then Will settles the game with a fine reverse stick shot. The boys controlled the last part of the game and set themselves up for a busy week with a good performance.
Cup quarter-final on Wednesday and Frank Mason on Thursday.
The 2nd XI had a tough game this weekend against a well organised Reigate team. Both teams had their moments in the first half with both keepers making some important saves. Cameron in attack posed problems down the right, but his excellent crosses into the Reigate D were not converted. The second half was similar to the first with neither team being able to break the deadlock. With four minutes remaining, good work from Joe saw the ball slapped into the goal mouth and James managed to force the ball into the goal for what looked like an unlikely winner. However, with one-minute remaining Eltham allowed the ball to get quickly down the middle of the pitch and the Reigate attacker converted the chance from just inside the D to earn a deserved 1 – 1 draw.
The Under 15A came up against a good Reigate side and had a tough game ahead of them. There were chances for both teams, but the defences held firm for most of the game. Jack did well in goal but Reigate were able to score two goals and in response Eltham only managed one meaning we lost the game narrowly 2-1. All the boys involved worked extremely hard and showed great determination right until the end of the game.
The Under 15B were involved in an extremely tight affair in what was a well-balanced game. We defended extremely well for the entire first half but conceded in the last few seconds of the half after a lapse of concentration. The boys fought hard for the rest of the game, but we were unable to convert the few chances we had and the score finished 1-0 in the oppositions favor.
The Under 14A team were missing a few boys due to England Ski training amongst other commitments. The boys were told that this was a day of opportunity, to face the challenge and for each player to step up and make a name for themselves. The game was close and well contested. Reigate as usual were physical and determined but the Eltham boys coped well and played some nice hockey. Reigate struck the first blow with a close-range effort that left Ollie no chance. The boys did not give up and forced a few chances of their own which they just couldn’t quite convert.
Half time they were 1-0 down but feeling positive. In the second half the physicality of their opposition increased, and it eventually led to a yellow card. Ollie kept the team in the game with a string of quality saves which inspired the boys to push hard for the equaliser.
It wasn’t long before the boys were rewarded for their efforts ending a great move with a simple finish. Eltham finished the game the strongest and had several good to chances to win the game, but it just wasn’t to their day. The game finished 1-1 which on reflection was a fair result. With a full squad this may have been a different affair. Huge credit to the boys in the manner they approached this game with a weaker squad.
The Under 14B team performance was somewhat rusty in truth. We started with good intentions to compete the tackles and maintain possession; however, it was the home side who showed the greater determination and flow to their game. For most of the match Eltham were off the pace in terms of passing and movement. There were glimpses of the good work in training, our best chance coming from a smart move down the right with Ethan and Joey linking well, but a great cross was just out of Saul’s reach for a consolation.
The Under 13A team were up against a decent Reigate side and had a point to prove, the match started with Reigate pressing quite hard and scoring in the first three minutes into the game, but once our players got the hang of their positional play we started making some good attacking moves with Jamie stealing the show up front. We went into the halftime 4-1 up.
The second half also started at a high pace with our midfielders and forwards putting on a fine show and Jamie finishing with a hattrick. The match ended with Charlie drag flicking a goal through a penalty corner, with the final score finishing 8-3 in our favour. A fine all-around performance from the team.
The Under 13B team continued their development with a superb 2-1 vs Reigate. All the players contributed to the win with everyone putting in a determined display. Ben was dangerous up the right and through the middle, Mike and Max were clever in their passing and determined in defence. Player of the match was Thomas who created the first goal for Dylan to score at the far post. A great performance.
The Under 13 C team had a rollercoaster of a game. Players worked hard to win the ball even though we didn’t defend very well in the first half and early in the second half which put Reigate in the lead and we were 3-0 down. It was then the determination and constant pressure from our midfielders that made us perform really well with Adam cracking two top of the circle goals and we ended the game with a 3-3 draw which was an incredible comeback from 0-3 with 12 minutes left. Overall it was again a great team effort to pull back a draw from a tough situation.
The Under 13D team suffered a defeat but played valiantly throughout and got better as the game went on. Eric was outstanding in goal.
The Under 12A team responded to a disappointing loss last week with a decent 2-0 win against a good Reigate side. Scores were level after a rather drab first period. Eltham created numerous chances but just couldn’t score past a resilient goal keeper. Noah made several good saves to keep the score level in the second period before Jake was able to score off his own rebound. Eltham continued to dominate the game. Eltham did manage to score a second goal to secure the win despite not being at their very best. There is plenty of potential in this group, it will just need some time and hard work on the training ground to maximise it.
The Under 12B boys came away with a 2-2 draw on Friday afternoon. A good game of hockey was played with both teams doing their fair share of attacking and creating chances. Seb made some good saves in goal and we put our chances away but Reigate managed to do the same. A good effort from all the boys involved as we prepare for next week.
The Under 12C team were outstanding on Friday as they came away with a 5-0 win over Reigate. Our defence remained strong whilst we constantly put Reigate under pressure and put our goal scoring opportunities away.
The Under 12D played superb hockey against Reigate on Friday afternoon in an excellent 8-2 win. All players worked hard off the ball, passed to space and finished clinically. It was a joy to watch.
