In this week of Remembrance, Eltham College has been marking the event with various activities in school and for the local community, including poppies put up around the edge of the whole school site in various locations and a special display in Central Hall .
On Friday 11 November, the School community also joined together in a poignant Act of Remembrance.
The special service was livestreamed to students and staff across the School, and began with the Consort Choir performing “For the fallen” by Douglas Guest.
This followed by the opening address from Reverend Jim Houghton who remembered and honoured the sacrifice of those who have died in the service of their country. He said: “This is a day when we will remember those who have fought and died for our protection and freedom.” Reverend Houghton added it was moving to know that the whole school community was being able to take part in the service from their classrooms.
The service featured the laying of wreaths by by Lt Archie Taylor on behalf of the school. In keeping with services across the country, a two-minute silence at 11am marked the time that the First World War officially came to an end.
The school chapel will be lit red this evening in a mark of remembrance.
‘At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.’
