Duke of Edinburgh

Co-Curricular

Eltham College has a thriving programme of involvement with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, with about eighty students beginning each year.

We are an independent Operating Authority within the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and students entering Year 10 onwards may start the awards at Silver level. All students entering the Sixth Form are able to start directly at Gold level so that they can complete by the time they leave the College.

The Programme

Participants in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme gain expertise in four areas:

  • Service to the community
  • A skill or hobby
  • Physical recreation
  • Expeditions

Many of the school’s co-curricular activities (from Rugby to Languages Club) are eligible for inclusion in the award scheme but must take place outside the school timetable. Full training in camp craft, first aid, navigation, the Countryside Code, and wilderness survival is given prior to expeditions. All students take an assessment before they embark on expeditions.

As well as providing the students with an attractive addition to their curriculum, the scheme is a lot of fun and offers the opportunity to try some very different and exciting activities.
