Scholarship Programme

“Is there any knowledge in the world which is so certain that no reasonable man (sic) could doubt it?” This question which at first sight might not seem difficult, is really one of the most difficult that can be asked, from “The Problems of Philosophy” Bertrand Russell 1912.

What are the Scholarship Programme details?

The programme builds on students’ regular curricular activities and work that is done in many of the subject based clubs and societies by examining links and themes between or across different subjects. Students engage with content even more challenging than that they would normally encounter in lessons and explore areas of a subject that are not covered in the curriculum. Students have access to both teaching staff and external speakers with wide ranging enthusiasms and expertise.

The specifics of the Programme

  • Weekly sessions
  • Variety of presenters internal and external
  • Sessions focussed on critical thinking
  • Trips and visits
  • Broadening involvement Athenaeum and Colloquim
  • Part of a broader enrichment programme including Oxbirdge entrance
  • Links to EPQ
  • Resources human and virtual

Case study

Year 7 scholars investigated the “Village Utopia” of Saltaire in West Yorkshire. The aim was to explore links between subjects and ideas and across time and to enthuse and inspire the students. The session focussed on the conditions existing in many 19th century factories, in particular the number of unacceptable health and safety issues evident in an image from the time.
