Sixth Form students through to The Weizmann Institute’s International Safe-Cracking Tournament

For the second year, Eltham College entered two teams into the competition sponsored by Weizmann UK to build a safe secured only using Physics principles, and hosted at Dulwich College.

Beginning back in September with planning and brainstorming, investigating and trying out ideas to build, the pressure and challenge of time began to stretch the resources and patience of the teams as in the last two weeks almost every lunchtime and afternoon was used to test, fix and improve their puzzles.

The competition at the beginning of the half term was tough, as the teams split up to try and break into other teams’ safes and to impress the judges with their understanding of the Physics involved in their own safes.  And with the top three teams winning a generously sponsored trip to compete in the international finals in Israel at stake, every detail counted.

But with one of our safes achieving third place, all the time and effort was well worth it, and the Box of Laws team are now preparing to improve their safe even more to take on the international teams in April at the Weizmann Institute in Israel in April.

Team Box of Laws (qualified for Israel):

Joshua M (Captain), Ike O, Maksud F, Miguel J, Joshua S and Trystan K

Team Break Point:

Sivashen N (Captain), Ellie B, Thomas B, Freddy J, Kiryl T, and Paula W
