Year 11 Scholars look at Covid Stats

The Year 11 students led by Maths teacher and former statistician Mr Andrew Hon looked at the mathematics behind the spread of Covid and the various measures used to try and mitigate as well as predict future trends.

Beginning with some calculus and moving on to the use of models, the students were able to see what flattening the curve actually means and how changes in one variable such as rate of transmission had such significant effects.  The group also looked at how a model like this could be applied to other scenarios such as planning resource allocations in developing urban areas.

The covid model, which Mr Hon devised himself graphically illustrated, the world of statistics encountering the real world and how the two can productively work together.
