Year 8 scholars examine nature on their doorstep

In their final meeting of the term the Year 8 Scholars led by Mr Sleath examined some of the natural history of the college grounds.  Having started in the Biology lab where the students were told something of taxonomy and the fact that the pigeon is in fact three types of bird (wood pigeon, stock dove and collared dove) the students with binoculars and telescope set out to explore the far reaches of the site.

As part of the lesson the students also learnt about the use of humane traps, with escape holes for smaller endangered species, how they work and how they aid our understanding.  One group of students managed to spot nine different types of birds during the tour and the highlight was a Green Woodpecker seen by Mr Sleath.
